What do outboard compression test readings mean?

When you're looking at a used outboard motor, the seller might hand you a slip of paper with a column of numbers — 120 psi, 118 psi, 125 psi, 119 psi — and call it the compression test. But what do those numbers actually mean? Are they good? Bad? Should you walk away?

Here's a plain-language breakdown of how to read compression test results on an outboard motor.

What is a compression test?

A compression test measures how much pressure each cylinder generates during the compression stroke — the moment just before the spark plug fires. The higher and more consistent the pressure, the better the engine's internal seals (piston rings, valves, and cylinder walls) are holding up.

To run the test, a mechanic removes each spark plug and threads a compression gauge into the plug hole. The engine is cranked over several times while the gauge records peak pressure. This is repeated for every cylinder.

What are good compression readings?

The target range depends on the type of motor:

  • Four-stroke outboards: 150–200 PSI per cylinder is the healthy range. Most Yamaha four-strokes run 160–185 PSI when in good shape.
  • Two-stroke outboards: 100–150 PSI is typical. The OX66 EFI two-stroke, for example, should read around 110–130 PSI across all cylinders.

These are general guidelines. What your specific motor should read depends on its model — always compare against the manufacturer's service manual spec if you can find it. But more important than hitting a specific number is what we'll cover next.

Consistency between cylinders matters more than the absolute number

This is the most important thing to understand about compression testing: the spread between your highest and lowest reading matters more than whether the numbers are "high enough."

A motor with four cylinders reading 135, 138, 132, and 136 PSI is in better shape than one reading 165, 168, 170, and 110 PSI — even though the second motor has higher overall numbers. That one low cylinder at 110 PSI tells you something is wrong: a worn ring, a burnt valve, or a damaged cylinder wall.

As a rule of thumb, any cylinder reading more than 15–20% below the others is a red flag. For a motor where most cylinders read 160 PSI, a cylinder reading below 130 PSI warrants investigation.

What causes low compression?

Low compression in one or more cylinders typically comes from:

  • Worn piston rings — the most common cause on high-hour engines. Rings seal the gap between the piston and cylinder wall; as they wear, pressure escapes.
  • Burnt or stuck valves — primarily a four-stroke issue. Valves that don't seat properly let pressure escape on the compression stroke.
  • Head gasket failure — a blown head gasket can cause pressure to leak between cylinders or out of the engine. This is a serious repair.
  • Cylinder wall damage — scoring or corrosion on the cylinder wall prevents the rings from sealing properly.

What does zero or very low compression mean?

A cylinder reading near zero PSI is a serious red flag. It typically means a seized piston, a catastrophically failed valve, or a hole in a piston — all of which require a full engine rebuild or replacement. Walk away from any motor with a zero or near-zero cylinder reading unless you're buying it for parts.

The wet compression test

If a cylinder reads low, a good mechanic will do a wet compression test: squirt a small amount of oil into that cylinder through the spark plug hole, then re-test. If the reading jumps significantly with the oil in there, the problem is worn piston rings (the oil temporarily seals the gap). If the reading stays low even with oil, the problem is more likely a valve issue — a harder repair.
